Week 2 - Level Blocking

This week i wasn't able to add a lot to my game, although the key things I worked on were: 

  • basic dialogue
  • start of my own tile map


dialogue system: 

with the dialouge system, i spent alot of this week learning the basics of yarnspinner!! It was a little tricky at first but a great tool once I understood some of the basics, I created scripts I plan to be able to reuse on any of the npcs, and just change what yarnspinner .yarn script it calls for!


To accompany the dialouge system, I wanted some sort of indicator to the player that the NPC could be interacted with. To do this ive used a speech bubble sprite from stardew valley but plan to replace it with my own later.  To do this I made a script that would hide the bubble, unless the player is inside the npcs collider area! 

Tile Map: 

This week I added in my own grass tilemap! I feel this grass is much more vibrant and the style I want for my game!

To help direct my friend on the sorta style I was looking for I took inspiration from the online web game PonyTown!

I was also able to grab a few screenshots to get a feel of how a cave level would feel in my game as I want the player to originally start in a cave!!

By running around in this game, I was able to get more of a feel about how the tile maps should work, how the player interacts with objects on the map ect!! It was a really useful tool for me to get a feel of how I want my game to be in the end result! 

Feedback: 

This week i received heaps of helpful feedback on things that need to be fixed / cleaned up in my game !! 

The key things were: 

  • layer order with player and npc - I need too fix the player disappearing behind npcs when they walk Infront of it! 
  • player still able to shoot while in dialogue - Need to make changes to the shooting script 
  • TMP allows for rich text to enhance my dialogue
  • Have interaction continue with F key rather then have a continue button on screen. 

I hope to fix all of these things and add more features next week for testing!!
