Week 4 - Presentation and Graphics

Week 4 - Presentation and Graphics
This week I worked on:
- New cave scene
- Forward walking animation
- New tile map
- New enemy sprite
- Game tutorial / introduction
- Light work on the games UI + Sound effects.
Tile Map + New Scene:
This week while working on my game, I had to take a shift with what tilemap I was using due to the person who was originally going to do it, had some things pop up and probably wouldn't be finished with it by the end of the assignment period, so I chose to find a new tile map to use instead!!
The tile map I ended up using is Pixel Fantasy World, by Dreamir on Itch.io! I found this suited the need for my game having both a forest scene and also an introductory cave scene.
I wanted this scene to act as the player introduction to the game, explaining the mechanics, while also setting the story for the game, with the ghost NPC teaching the player about the world that they have to save.
To have the game mechanics integrate seamlessly with the game play, I used UI text box using the World Space Render mode, so that it would only show on the areas of the screen I wanted it too!
I then linked up this scene with the one I was using previously with a small switch scene script and a collider !!
I also used this new tile map to create a new forest scene, and started adding things around the world.
New Sprites:
This week I added a new forward walking animation, as well as a custom sprite for the enemies and for the ghost who sets up the story in the game !! I decided to go with a ghost form for the enemies as well, to develop the story of "good" and "bad" spirits, but also as ghosts don't need walking animations so this saved time!!!!!!
UI + Sound Effects:
I made a small start on the title ui this week, just getting some buttons and scenes linked up!
I also added some sound effects and background music:
- Background music: Fantasy RPG Soundtrack Music by alkakrab
- Sound effects: Minifantasy - Dungeon Audio Pack by Leohpaz
- UI sounds: Universal UI/Menu Soundpack by Cyrex Studios
Feedback:
This week I received some positive feedback on my games progress:
- Love the classic RPG feel
- Sound effects and background music sets the mood nicely
- Combat feels good
- Maybe different walking sound for in cave compared to grass - will try and implement this if i get time !
- Nice world building
Apart from this, my goals for next week are to:
- Finish up NPC Dialogue
- Finish forest scene tilemap
- Finish up UI
- Add custom magic animations
Id also like to add a second game mode "challenge" mode, where the player can just fight endlessly until they die, and try and beat their best time. This adds some more fun mechanics to the game while also keeping a focus on the story, although how long this takes depends if it actually is implemented as finishing up the story section is my main priority!
